Travelling by train is one of the most environmentally friendly mode of transportation, perhaps rivalled only by cycling. But this two can also be combined with a great advantage: on most domestic trains we offer a comfortable and safe way of travel - not only for our passengers but also for their bikes.
The most important and useful aspects of carrying bicycles in Hungary:
- Normal bicycles can be carried on almost every train. There is only one exception, if this symbol prohibits it: Ŏ

In any other cases, less or more bicycles can be carried. If you see one of the following symbols among the train services, there is a bicycle carriage (or at least designated area for bikes) on the train: Õ Ō Ʊ Ʋ.
- If there is no symbol, 2-2 bicycles can be carried in the first and last 2nd class carriage, in the front of the carriage doors (without obstructing entry and exit)
- Different rules apply to special bicycles (e.g. tandem, bicycle trailer, cargo bike etc.). These types of bicycles can only carried in bicycle carriages (trains with Ʊ or Ʋ symbols).
- Small wheeled bikes (under 16”) and folded bikes (in folded state) up to 20” can be carried free of charge.
- Normal adult and electric scooters can be carried free of charge only if the steering wheel is folded down. Otherwise a bicycle ticket is needed for it.
The prize of the bicycle ticket is uniformed: HUF 500 per trip.
There is a bicycle country pass if you carry your bike many times within 30 days. The price of this pass is HUF 4950.
On some trains (typically nationwide on InterCity, EuroCity and express trains, and some other trains in main tourist regions, like Lake Balaton) a bicycle space ticket is needed in addition to the bicycle ticket or county pass as well. Ō or Ʋsymbols shows (the „R” letter) the bicycle space ticket obligation. If you select such a train on one of the electronic ticket purchase platforms, the system will automatically provide you the bicycle space ticket as well.
2 bicycle tickets (or country passes) and 2 bicycle space tickets (if it’s needed) are required for carrying special bikes. (There is no separate category in the ticketing system for this, you have to know the rule and buy doubled tickets.)
