Different tickets and passes can be used for travel on Budapest and suburban sections of HÉV lines. The following stations mark the boundary of Budapest:
- H5: Békásmegyer
- H6: Millenniumtelep
- H8: Ilonatelep
- H9: Szabadságtelep
(H7 suburban railway is located entirely within Budapest.)
Budapest pass is only valid on the Budapest sections of HÉV lines; the single ticket and the block of 10 tickets; the Budapest 24- and 72-hour travelcards.
HÉV ticket is valid only on the suburban sections of HÉV lines.
Pest County Pass and Hungary Pass are valid on the entire length of HÉV lines; as well as the Pest County24 and Hungary24 day tickets.
Unique rules:
- BKK passes and tickets – purchased in advance – are also valid for travel between any Budapest station on the H8 suburban railway and Kistarcsa, Kórház.
- In case of transferring between HÉV lines H8 and H9 at Cinkota – if at least one of the departure or destination stations is outside Budapest – it is sufficient to pay the fare for the Budapest section only once.

Transportation of live animals, bicycles
Transportaion of live animals is possible by the following ways:
- Free of charge: any live animal in a closed transport container whose size does not exceed the allowable hand luggage dimensions;
- For a fee: dog on a leash, with a muzzle, in clean condition.
Assistance dogs and service dogs can be transported free of charge even without a closed transport container.
The dog country pass and the dog ticket can be used along the entire length of the HÉV lines.
Bicycle transportation is possible with a Bicycle Country Pass, a bicycle ticket, a single line ticket, or one ticket from a block of 10 tickets, also along the entire length of HÉV lines.
Within Budapest transportation of 1 bicycle or 1 dog is free of charge if passenger transporting it possesses any of the following:
- Budapest-pass;
- Monthly pass for job seekers;
- Pest County Pass;
- Hungary Pass;
- Free travel entitlement within Budapest.

Boarding to HÉV is only permitted with a pre-purchased pass, ticket, or travel document at stations where ticket purchasing options are available. A ticket inspector on the train may only issue a ticket if there is no ticket sales point at the boarding location, or if the machine present is not operational or does not accept cash payment. The ticket, as well as any card or certificate entitling the holder to a discount, must be presented and, upon request, handed over to the person conducting the inspection.
