Interesting trains around Lake Balaton

The most wanted event of the last years is back to Northern shore of Balaton. Ambient of the 60es and 70es are summoned by several engines and carriages in original livery, featured on this line only this weekend!

For this year even a steam engine is announced, hauling not only the already know blue express train, but for the first time also a passenger train in green livery. Selected trains will also have a dining car service of the past and the present.

There is even more: it takes place twice, on the first weekend of July and August each. Construction works and electrifying of the line between Székesfehérvár and Balatonfüred will cause significant changes in the next years, so it will be the last chance to travel and photograph in this environment.

Special vehicles of the event

Steam engine Class 424

The best known steam loco of the MÁV haven’t only got the nicknames „Nurmi” and „Buffalo” due to its power, but also the respect and love of railway workers – and even the man of the street. Some of the engines, built in three and a half decades since 1924 stranded on the network of North Korea or hauling the presidential trains of Yugoslavia. First and last loco of the class is preserved in the Budapest Railway Museum, another two are hauling heritage trains – and take part at this event for the first time – Saturdays with the blue express carriages, Sundays with the green passenger train!

Diesel engine M41 2103

Known as „Rattler“ thanks to its typical engine sound, a solid part of the haulages along the Northern shore of the Balaton – but this one has its original livery, and the 70es are also recalled by the matching green passenger carriages. At the second event a driver-cab carriage should be also ready, to let the engine work on the rear of the train!

Nohab - Koncz JánosDiesel engines Class M61

Streamlined nose and many technical features testify the US-origin of some blueprints – however, they were built at the Swedish NOHAB works, which has become a namesake for them.  Whether it was their origin or rather the rarity of the only 20 engines, which were delivered for Hungary in 1963, however, they’ve become quickly cultic. In the first decades they have pulled express and governmental trains, from the 80es they have become one with the landscape of the Balaton’s Northern shore. Right two decades ago they have retired from everyday service, but even four of them were preserved as heritage locos – and the batch was even extended with their “abroad relatives”. The trains 19704 and 19701 will be twin-hauled on Sunday!

Tekergő vonatDiesel engines Class M62

Like the Swedish locos, even these vehicles have a nickname according to their origin: hundreds of „Sergei” was built by the Soviet industries not only for Hungary and the homeland, but also for many communist countries. They are still not to be missed from freight traffic, but even capable to pull passenger trains in the summer season – and today it works only with older carriages.

In the past years even three of them have got their original liveries back – two of them will work at the event. At the Saturday morning train they will provide extra haulage for an M41, on the Sunday early afternoon train from Tapolca the 60es will be relieved by the blue express train.

Diesel engines Class M40 with retro dining car

American design must have inspired not only Swedish, but also Hungarian industry – maybe at the making of the Class M40 at the Ganz-MÁVAG works in the 60es. But the nickname „Hunchback“ is not accidentally for sure. Today they have become very rare, particularly with passenger trains, so their operation will be something special – but it can be even topped with the twin-haulage of two engines, both in original livery. Their trainset will also consist an green luggage van, and a heritage dining car, where you can taste meals and drinks from the 70es and 80es.

Dining car

The recently reformed service of the MÁV-START comes also to the Northern shore of Balaton. Normally running to Prague, Berlin and Warsaw, now this air-conditioned carriage provides not only the same range of meals and drinks like in the “Balaton-Express“ trains, but also special craft beers of the brewery “Roundhouse” – named by locos!
